Why Financial Education Is a Justice Issue

Updated: Jul 4

Financial education isn’t just about money. It’s about equity, empowerment, and opportunity. When people understand how to manage their finances, they gain more control over their futures. But when access to that knowledge is limited, it becomes a barrier that reinforces inequality. That’s why I believe financial education is one of the most urgent justice issues of our generation.

Through my work with Good Steward School, I’ve helped lead financial education workshops specifically designed for under-served communities in St. Louis. These sessions are built around real-life tools: how to create a budget, build savings, invest wisely, and set achievable financial goals. They’re not just lessons. They’re roadmaps to financial independence.

In many marginalized communities, especially among youth and first-generation earners, financial education is either absent or inaccessible. That gap creates long-term consequences. Without the tools to manage money, people are more vulnerable to debt, predatory practices, and financial instability. I’ve seen firsthand how simply understanding a savings plan or how credit works can shift someone’s entire mindset about their future.

This is why I’ve made financial education a core part of my mission. Whether I’m speaking in a classroom, hosting a workshop through GSS, or mentoring a young entrepreneur, I approach it the same way: with empathy, practicality, and the belief that every person deserves access to this knowledge.

Financial education is bigger than numbers. It’s about helping people unlock their potential, support their families, and build lasting change in their communities. If we want a more just world, we need to equip people not just with inspiration, but with the information that helps them take control.
